A deteriorating Monroe sewer line will be abandoned and filled with cement to prevent future sinkholes.

About two weeks ago, steel plates were placed over Todhunter Road where it had sunk about three inches as a result of a sewer line break in the 600 block between Yankee Road and Britton Lane.

Now, that portion of the road is closed so crews can fix the sewer line break.

Todhunter Road is closed to through traffic “to keep as much of the heavy traffic off of this area as possible for the time being,” said Dan Arthur, Monroe’s public works director.

Butler County’s Water and Sewer Department had originally planned to reline the inside of the 27-inch diameter line, but will now fill it with grout to prevent future sinkholes.

Approximately 1,000 feet of plastic pipe will be installed to replace the current sewer line, according to Bob Leventry, Butler County Water and Sewer Department director.

“We hope to begin construction in early March and be completed by the end of March,” he said, adding that the construction estimate is $300,000.

A request for proposals will go out to several contractors in the next two weeks, according to Leventry.

Traffic flow will be maintained on Todhunter Road during construction, he said.
