Grand juries, which meet in secret, review criminal charges brought by police and prosecutors and investigate possible criminal behavior. The proceedings are usually one-sided, because the accused is not present and witnesses are not cross-examined.

A grand jury may issue an indictment if it finds probable cause that a crime was committed and the accused person is responsible. An indictment is an accusation that must then be proven in court. The grand jury may also elect to issue no indictment.

Indictments returned during a recent session of the Butler County grand jury:

Isiah J. Conlee, 607 Wilson St., Middletown; indicted on one count of possession of cocaine.

Emily Francisco, 4875 Highpoint Court, Hamilton; indicted on four counts of aggravated possession of drugs (direct), three counts of aggravated trafficking in drugs (direct), and one count each of illegal conveyance of weapons or prohibited items onto grounds of specified governmental facility, aggravated possession of drugs, and illegal use or possession of drug paraphernalia.

Christian Morris, 89 Foalrun Drive, Monroe; indicted on one count each of deception to obtain a dangerous drug (direct), and illegal processing of drug documents (direct).

Afrai Ray Harris, 856 Franklin St., Hamilton; certified back to the lower court on one count each of possession of marijuana, and illegal use or possession of drug paraphernalia.

Lavonne McIntosh Jr., 134 Gordon, Hamilton; indicted on one count each of possession of heroin, and aggravated possession of drugs.

Nicholas Robuck, 981 Mark Ave., Hamilton; indicted on one count each of possession of cocaine, and illegal use or possession of drug paraphernalia.

Randy Walker, 1019 Maple Ave., Hamilton; indicted on one count each of aggravated possession of drugs, and illegal use or possession of drug paraphernalia.

Ashlyn Simpson, 1808 Winona Drive, Middletown; indicted on one count of trespass in a habitation.

Dakota A. West, 5294 Stillwell Beckett, Oxford; indicted on two counts of aggravated possession of drugs (direct), and one count of illegal conveyance of weapons or prohibited items onto grounds of specified governmental facility (direct).

Christopher Duane Goins, 804 Belle, Hamilton; indicted on one count each of having weapons while under disability, improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle, aggravated possession of drugs (direct), resisting arrest, possession of marijuana, and illegal use or possession of marijuana drug paraphernalia.

James E. Schrauder, 331 W. Vine St., Apt. 2, Oxford; indicted on one count of aggravated possession of drugs.

Michael R. White, 3715 Beatrice Drive, Apt. 2, Cincinnati; indicted on one count each of burglary, burglary (direct), and assault (direct).
