Middletown dispatchers received a call at about 4:30 p.m. about an overturned kayak. Two males were seen walking along the bike path, but rescuers continued to scan the river for survivors until it was confirmed everyone was safe.

The Monroe River Rescue Unit was on standby and emergency workers were stationed at the Trenton bridge to look for anyone in the water

“They actually capsized downriver, and the kayak got caught up in the dam,” said Middletown Assistant Fire Chief Tom Snively.

The two males were uninjured and wearing life vests, he said.

Snively said a decision was made to leave the kayak in the water, as well as another one little farther downriver because retrieval was a “high-risk operation.”

He said it is believed the watercrafts will eventually wash ashore.
