We posed several questions to Averitt about working for Waffle House and the roadblocks the company sometimes faces when looking to hire new employees. Here’s what she had to say:
Q: What’s the biggest challenge facing the company and others in the industry and how is the company uniquely positioned to address that challenge?
A: “Every industry is facing the same challenge in this economy and that is people supply. Waffle House is unique in that it does most of its staffing through word of mouth in the community. It is important to us to build ties within the community and to help employee our community members.”

Q: Some job seekers are concerned about the limits of advancement within a company. To what degree can your employees advance from entry-level roles to be promoted to greater positions within the company?
A: “Many of our current managers were once hourly associates. We encourage people to grow within their position and to gradually take on larger roles within our units. Our management team is all home grown, with promotions only coming from within for senior managers.”
Q: What’s the most prevalent roadblock you encounter when it comes to hiring and what can jobseekers do to remedy that situation?
A: “Perhaps the first is finding people to staff our units since we are not allowed to post on sites like Indeed.com. Job seekers can remedy this by applying with us directly and by helping spread the word that we are hiring. Finding people who are able to find transportation to work should probably be considered our second biggest roadblock. There are multiple solutions to this, including bus lines, Uber, Lyft, carpooling, etc.”
Q: What’s the vision for the company’s growth, both jobs and otherwise, for the next five years?
“Waffle House is looking to strengthen their current locations and build great relationships within the community before building new units in new areas. Waffle House plans to keep employing community members across all locations to help our economy stay strong.”
