WWII vet, longtime Nazarene pastor dies at 92

Shirley Zuercher takes solace in knowing that her parents who were married for 64 years have been reunited.

“My father is rejoicing, the angels are singing and my mom has a big smile on her face,” she said.

On Saturday, her father, the Rev. Bernard F. Miller, 92, a decorated World War II veteran and longtime pastor in the Nazarene church, passed away in Fairfield. The Rev. Miller and his wife moved to Fairfield 10 years ago to be closer to their daughter.

Marie Miller passed away in 2006, and Bernard Miller was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease several years ago, his daughter said. Throughout his later years, Miller never lost his zeal for life, his daughter said.

“He had such an infectious laugh,” she said. “He loved to have fun. He never was shy, and even after the Alzheimer’s, he’d slap the other patients on the back and say, ‘God loves you.’”

Miller was affiliated with the Nazarene church throughout his career. He most recently attended the Springdale Church of the Nazarene. He served as pastor at five Nazarene churches in Northwest Ohio from 1956 to 1980.

During World War II service with the U.S. Army, Miller was credited with single-handedly destroying a German tank when he tossed a grenade through the hatch, killing the entire crew. His action earned a Bronze Star.

“We were real proud of him,” his daughter said.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Tuesday until time of service at 11 a.m. at the Avance Funeral Home and Crematory, 4976 Winton Road, Fairfield. Dovie Hudson will officiate.
