Students create butterfly memorials

Ross M.S. honors Dalton Chandler, who died of cancer in February.

ROSS TWP. — Sixth-graders at Ross Middle School are hoping to create hundreds, if not thousands, of butterflies as a tribute to Dalton Chandler, a classmate who died of cancer in February after a nine-year battle.

“He had cancer for a long time,” said his friend Michael Saylor. “We want to make as many (butterflies) as we can to show how much we miss Dalton.”

“He was really an inspiration,” said Clayton Eschenbrenner. “It’s all very sad.”

The rabble of butterflies will be donated to the Cancer Free Kid’s Butterfly Walk and 5K, which takes place on May 12 in Loveland, according to teacher Kristy Filgis.

“The butterflies will be attached to ribbon and wrapped around trees along the walk to decorate the path of walkers and runners,” Filgis said.

Students have been decorating butterflies for two months during study time and reading time, Filgis said. Some have even making them at home and bringing them in.

“It can be a beautiful thing when we all get together as a community to raise awareness of cancer,” said classmate Logan Fields.
