Shelly Schultz understands the challenges facing her as she takes over as fiscal officer in Fairfield Twp., replacing Nancy Bock, who died on Nov. 29, 2017.

Bock served as fiscal officer since 1999, and Schultz said Bock understandably ran the finance office a certain way. Schultz eventually hopes to streamline the accounting process and make department heads “more responsible” for their budgets.

Schultz started on Friday, and she’s completing Bock’s term. The fiscal officer position is up for election in November 2019. Schultz said people “had nice things” to say about Bock and she has “big shoes to fill.”

Schultz will be paid $30,000 a year, she said. She also works as a tax professional at Charles Vonderhaar CPA Firm in Evendale. She expects to work about 20 to 30 hours a week for the township and 40 hours a week at Vonderhaar, especially during busy tax season, she said.

Schultz, who has lived in the township since 2001, and her husband of 20 years, Jonathan, have two children: Zachary, 12, and Mackenzie, 8. She was attracted to the position because she has more time since she doesn’t volunteer as much in school.

She wanted to “be more involved in the community,” said Schultz, who has attended township meetings.

The 42-year-old believes her accounting experience and knowledge of social media have prepared her for the job.

“A new perspective” is how she described her outlook, adding “I’m ready for it.”

Bock was elected to the position in 1999 and has been re-elected ever since. She was last re-elected in 2015. After Bock’s death, her position was filled by Fairfield Twp.’s assistant fiscal officer, Patty Moore. Fairfield Twp. trustees appointed Moore on Dec. 1.
