Crews encountered heavy fire conditions that had already vented through the roof of a two-story building, according to Fire Chief Brian Wright with the Middletown Division of Fire.
He added the fire extended to the “exposure on the west side to a three-story structure containing multiple apartments.”
No injuries were reported for firefighters.
Two residents were evaluated on scene for smoke inhalation and neither required treatment or transport.
“Fire crews worked diligently to prevent further extension to surrounding structures and made excellent tactical decisions that successfully stopped the spread of the fire,” Wright said. “The three-story building did sustain a partial roof collapse.”
He said eight residents are currently working with the Red Cross for additional assistance and support.
Crews remain on scene extinguishing any remaining hot spots, according to Wright.
“Fire marshals are conducting an investigation to determine the cause and origin of the fire, which remains under investigation at this time,” he said.
Middletown Division of Fire is asking residents to avoid the 1700 block of Central Avenue.
Central Avenue will remain closed while operations continue.
