Fairfield Schools to add Chinese to language offerings

Fairfield City Schools will add Chinese to its foreign language options starting in 2015-16.

The board approved the action Tuesday, upon the recommendation last month of foreign language chairs Mindy Reed and Cindy Jones. They suggested adding Chinese because of that country’s increasing dominance in world trade. Chinese is also the most spoken language in the world, with 1.9 billion speakers — more than double the amount of the number two language, Spanish, with 406 million speakers. English is third with 335 million.

Fairfield will also continue to offer its current languages, Spanish, French and German, though additional staffing needs have not yet been determined, said Lani Wildow, the district’s curriculum director.

The district will “examine the numbers of students who have registered for all of our languages and make our staffing decisions at that point, which would probably be sometime in March,” she said.

Chinese language courses have seen mixed success in Butler County districts, with Ross Local Schools also offering it. However, Lakota and Talawanda schools dropped Chinese language courses due to low enrollment, officials said.
