Prison inmates without heat

Dozens of inmates at the Lebanon Correctional Honor Camp endured a frigid evening Monday after one of three furnaces broke, according to officials with the Ohio Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

Institutional inspector Dan Hudson said approximately 80 inmates were affected as a new part was ordered for the broken furnace. Inmates were given blankets to keep warm, he said.

Tammy Eversole, of Middletown, said her cousin Curtis Ward, 42, is one of the inmates who spent the night without heat.

Eversole visited Ward, who is serving a sentence for aggravated vehicular homicide, on Monday at the prison.

“It was cold and his hand was like ice,” Eversole said. “I know they’re prisoners. I know he deserved to do time, but you shouldn’t freeze to death.”

Hudson said the furnace had been fixed as of Tuesday.

“It was always a concern,” he said of the subzero temperatures. “We gave them extra blankets and ordered the part immediately.”
