Man who cut off Fairfield Marine’s finger faces prison, deportation

Hamilton man is scheduled to be sentenced June 17.

HAMILTON — A Hamilton man is facing prison after assaulting a veteran in a bar on Sept. 11, and cutting off his finger, according to Butler County prosecutors.

Eric Gomez, 33, of the 1300 block of Parrish Ave., was convicted Wednesday of felonious assault for attacking Luis Guerrero-Mejia, 24, of Fairfield, with a machete at the 513 Club on Central Avenue in Hamilton, said Assistant Butler County Prosecutor Josh Muennich.

Guerrero-Mejia and his brother were both injured with broken beer bottles when they entered the bar and Gomez and seven others attacked. The fight followed a dispute earlier in the evening at another club.

Muennich said Guerrero-Mejia, a Marine who fought in Iraq, tried to defend himself with a chair, but Gomez severed his “trigger finger” with a 3-foot long machete.

The defendant maintained he was backing away from Guerrero-Meijia and “found” a machete on the floor then used it. Muennich said it is the prosecution’s belief Gomez brought the weapon to the bar for the fight.

Gomez remains housed in the Butler County Jail. He is scheduled to be sentenced June 17 by Butler County Common Pleas Judge Andrew Nastoff. Gomez faces two to eight years in prison and possible deportation, Muennich said.
