Buchanan was arrested and indicted earlier this summer on multiple charges including rape, unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, corrupting another with drugs and permitting consumption or possession of alcohol by an underage person involving five boys. The alleged crimes occurred between July 2003 and July 2006 involving a boy under the age of 13.
In June. after a caller tipped police, Butler County Sheriff’s detectives began investigating Buchanan, 37, and his activities in a 12-foot high wooden shed beside his house at 141 N. Riverside Drive.
A search of the shed turned up dozens of sex-related objects. On the evening of June 10, detectives hauled out 49 items, including an inflatable sex doll, 10 sex toys, new and used condoms, three tubes of lubricant, a child’s sleeping bag, a stained comforter, three cell phones, a laptop, a camera, CDs and DVDs, according to a search warrant.
Capt. Mike Craft of the Butler County Sheriff’s Office said the latest indictments come from a forensic examination of the electronics taken from the shed. There is no indication local victims are pictured.
“These are items from the Internet,” Craft said.
“There is no evidence that this is material he was creating,” Assistant Butler County Prosecutor Kelly Heile said.
Buchanan told detectives he was sleeping in the shed purchased for his sons. He said little else after his arrest, according to detectives.
Two juvenile boys described their sexual encounters with Buchanan, who they said supplied them with booze and marijuana, according to court records.
One boy told detectives he drank alcohol and eventually fell asleep on the floor of the shed in April, while on spring break. He woke “to find his pants and underwear pulled down near his knees” and Buchanan masturbating beside him, according to the court document.
Another boy said Buchanan coerced him into sex while he was in the shed, according to the affidavit. The last of the allegations occurred within two weeks of Buchanan’s arrest.
Buchanan was indicted June 18 on 19 felony charges. That indictment included five counts of rape of child under the age of 13, three counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, and multiple charges of permitting consumption or possession of alcohol by an underage person, gross sexual imposition, attempted rape and attempted gross sexual imposition and corrupting another with drugs.
Buchanan has pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to be in court Sept. 16 for a pre-trial hearing. He is being held in the Butler County Jail in lieu of $250,000 bond.
