Hearings set for couple charged in fatal baseball bat beating

HAMILTON — The couple charged in the July 14 fatal beating and robbery of a 44-year-old man at his Ludlow Street home both have court hearings scheduled for next week.

Phillip Smith Jr., 31, of 1108 Azel Ave., and Leeanna Rayas, 30, 540 N. Seventh St., who were both arrested Tuesday, July 27, are set to appear at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3, for preliminary hearings in Hamilton Municipal Court.

Smith is charged with aggravated murder and aggravated robbery in the case; Rayas is charged with complicity to aggravated murder and complicity to aggravated robbery. Both are being held without bond in the Butler County Jail.
