Hamilton man arrested for last week’s shooting on Front Street

Police have made an arrest in the shooting of a Hamilton man on Front street last week

Christopher Smiley, 24, of Fairview Avenue, was taken into custody Thursday and charged with felonious assault for allegedly shooting Anthony Carter on the night of March 21. He is housed in the Butler County Jail.

Officers were dispatched about 11:50 p.m. to the 500 block of South Front Street on a report of a man shot. They found Carter, 51, of Progress Avenue suffering from a gunshot wound to the pelvis, according to the Hamilton police report.

Carter was lying next to his running 1999 Ford Expedition, police said. He was flown by medical helicopter to the University of Cincinnati Medial Center. According to police, Carter is recovering from his wounds.

In six 911 calls, people said they heard multiple shots fired.

“Shots outside my window. Somebody is out there shooting, five or six times,” a female caller told the dispatcher.

Another caller urged officials to come to the area.

“Man please hurry. They are still shooting. I just see people running,” the caller said.

A woman told the dispatcher she heard 12 to 13 shots and cars were fleeing that area.

A man said he was staying inside because shots were still being fired, but he told dispatchers he could see the victim.

“He’s not moving. He is on the ground,” the caller said.
