Controversial movie to open in Middletown, Dayton theaters

The controversial film “The Interview” arrives on the big screen via the Danbarry theaters beginning New Year’s Eve.

Danbarry Cinemas, 3479 Dixie Highway in Middletown, will play the film starting Wednesday. which was at the center of an international incident. The comedy, starring Seth Rogen and James Franco, is about the CIA recruiting a tabloid TV team to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un.

A group calling itself “Guardians of Peace” hacked into Sony Pictures Entertainment, threatening a 9/11 style incident if the movie was ever shown. The FBI determined that North Korea was behind the cyber attack. Sony at first scrapped the movie, but then decided to give it a limited release.

“While many of the larger theater chains have passed on the film, Danbarry cinemas has opted to play it,” a press release from Danbarry states. The theater calls it “the most controversial film in American history.”

“The Interview” will also play at Danbarry’s South Dayton and Huber Heights locations beginning Friday. Although those are second-run theaters, admission prices for “The Interview” will be $8 for all shows. Danbarry Cinemas is an Ohio-based theater chain that operates theaters in Chillicothe, Dayton, Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.
