Cincinnati State offering free classes this summer

Cincinnati State is offering graduating high school seniors a free way to get a jump start on college.

The college unveiled its new “3 and a book” program Thursday.

The school will offer graduating high school students up to three free credit hours, a free textbook and a fee waiver for this summer.

The offer is available to any high school student living in Hamilton, Butler, Warren, or Clermont counties, according to the school.

Cincinnati State officials said their goal is to make college more attainable and affordable.

“We want to help the parents. This is an opportunity to demonstrate to the tax payers of Ohio that their tax dollars are showing value,” Cincinnati State President O’Dell Owens said in a press release.

The college said it hopes the program will help prepare students for college work and to help them earn extra credits.

“The research has shown that if students arrive on our campus after high school graduation with a few credits in their transcript and an appreciation for what it takes to do college-level work, they are likely to have a successful experience,” Owens said. “A high school student motivated enough to take a college course over the summer is a student I want.”

The offer extends to any student who takes a class at the college’s Clifton or Middletown locations. It is also extended to ninth-graders as well as 2015 graduates.

Those credits will transfer to any public college or university in Ohio.
