The group left on Thursday after nearly a week on the mission trip, one they had already planned prior to the June 3 eruption of the Fuego volcano.

There have been 114 people reported dead since the eruption.

“Due to roads and bridges closing from lava flow, we had to go the long way — it was about a 3-hour drive, half through town and half through jungle with no real main road,” she wrote.

The vans could not make it through he last half hour of the trip “due to flowing rivers that had to be crossed,” but they said a random bus appeared and they loaded 1,500 pounds of foods and supplies on the bus and they crossed three large rivers.

The supplies were delivered and distributed to a church.

“The people were saying that we were real missionaries because no one had come that far into the village. Everyone was so grateful,” Higdon wrote. “It was extremely rewarding to know that we were able to help the people in need.”

Jeff Kenworthy, a Fairfield firefighter and church member, told our news partners WCPO that the missionaries spent the past week helping people cut off from by the lava flow.

He said they were planning the mission trip before the volcano erupted.

“As we got down here, got around, we realized there was some need in the volcano area, and we took advantage of that and went up there,” he said.
