As a young man growing up in Tennessee, Darryl Worley was obsessed with music and getting outside with friends to hunt and fish. Decades later, just weeks shy of his 50th birthday, those pastimes are monopolizing his time more than ever. Of course, now these obsessions pay his bills.

Atom Records presents the country singer Darryl Worley at Gilly’s in Dayton on Tuesday, Oct. 21, in an acoustic, in-the-round performance with fellow Nashville artists Dan Demay and A.J. Masters.

“I’ve kind of got two full-time jobs going right now with my music career, and I’m trying to carve out a new niche in the outdoor world,” Worley said in a recent telephone interview. “It has just been beating me to death. I decided to pursue the outdoor world stuff this fall, because we had big tour scheduled for this year, but it got canceled at the last minute. It left us with a big hole in the fall of the year, which kind of hurt us.”

Worley decided to jump boots first into the outdoorsman world of hunting and fishing.

“I’ve got to meet some great new folks in the industry,” he said. “They’re learning some stuff about me for the first time and what I’ve got going on with the outdoor world and all that kind of stuff. It’s been a lot of fun for me because that’s where my heart is. Any kind of huntin’, fishin’, shootin’, I’m all gung ho, so I jumped all over that and started scheduling stuff.

“Lo and behold work started coming in like crazy,” Worley continued with a chuckle. “I was like, ‘What in the world?’ We didn’t expect to get the work we’ve gotten for these fall months, but it has really been a huge blessing. At the same time, I’m doing double duty. It’s like being back 12 years ago when I first started out.”

In Dayton, Worley will be performing in a rare in-the-round showcase with Demay and Masters.

“When I work with Dan and AJ, we usually do perform on stage together and it’s always fun,” Worley said. “Those guys are characters in their own right and great songwriters, obviously. With us guys it always comes off like we’re playing in the living room for friends. Obviously, it’s a lot more intimate. How could it not be?

“It’s always fun, especially when it’s a real show for people with a venue and a little advertisement so people know you’re coming,” he said, “I’m really looking forward to it.”
