Wayne High School senior Javon Hammonds announced his verbal commitment to Marshall University on Sunday.

Hammonds, a 6-foot-5, 230-pound defensive end, leads Wayne with 32 tackles, including three sacks, and two fumble recoveries in four games. The Warriors improved to 3-1 with a 27-22 victory Friday against Springfield in Huber Heights.

Hammonds received an offer from Marshall in June. He visited Marshall in Huntington, W.Va., for its season opener against Albany on Sept. 2, according to Rivals.com.

Hammonds had announced offers from James Madison, Howard, West Virginia, Akron, Miami and other programs this year.

Marshall’s 2023 roster includes another Wayne graduate, quarterback Cam Fancher, a redshirt sophomore who took over as the starter midway through last season and was 6-1. He has thrown for 446 yards this season, leading Marshall (2-0) to victories over Albany and East Carolina.

Marshall has two other former Greater Western Ohio Conference players on its roster: Chase Harrison, a redshirt freshman quarterback from Centerville; and Isaiah Gibson, a redshirt junior defensive lineman from Springfield who debuted at Marshall last season after starting his career at Kentucky.
