HARRISON — In an upset-marred tournament, the Ross Rams held their own and claimed enough team points to defend the small school title at the 2010 Glenn Sample Wrestling Classic.

The Rams finished 13th overall after Sunday’s final day of the 36-team tournament, placing four wrestlers in the top eight of their weight classes.

“We’re a pretty solid team, but you never know in a tournament like this. There were a lot of upsets early, but our guys didn’t fall to the upsets. They stood their ground and wrestled pretty hard,” Ross coach Rich Dunn said.

Moeller, Elder and Mason finished 1-2-3, respectively. Lakota West finished fourth, Lakota East eighth, Fairfield 11th, Hamilton 19th, Badin 26th, Talawanda 30th and Edgewood 31st.

Senior Patrick McKernan led Ross with a third-place finish at 119 pounds. Seeded fifth in his weight class, McKernan was shut out by Ryle, Kentucky’s top-seed and eventual runner up T.J. Ruschell, 15-0, in the semifinals, but came back to decision Mount Vernon’s Dakota Riley 5-1 to claim third.

Of the 14 weight classes, only three of the No. 1 seeds won their brackets.

Lakota East’s Ryan Miller, who entered the tournament as an eighth seed, decisioned No. 2 Moeller’s Joey Ward 6-3 to win the 130-pound weight class. Miller was voted the tournament’s Most Valuable Wrestler by the coaches.

Lakota West came away with three individual titles. Ty Davis won the 135-pound class with a 10-1 major decision over Fairfield’s Adam Sams, Vinnie Bradberry (160) scored a 3-0 decision over Oak Hills’ Ryan Fitzpatrick and 171-pounder Christian Estes pinned Elder’s Robbie Fuhr in 1:20.

Previously undefeated 140-pounder Austin Sams of Fairfield lost a narrow 3-2 decision in his final to Kyle McIntyre of Mason.

“It was a big disappointment for me,” Sams said. “I expected something a little better out of my performance personally. It’s still early in the season, though, so I know I’ve got a long way to go.”

Hamilton’s Terrion Jackson, a No. 1 seed, finished third at 285 and teammate Jake Venable finished fourth at 215.

“I’m a second-year wrestler, and this is one of the toughest tournaments in the state. I’m disappointed that I lost my last match, but to place fourth here has me excited about the rest of the season,” Venable said.
