Allinger, Beck, Maus headline All-Area baseball team

Austin Allinger, Troy Beck and Pete Maus headline the 2015 Journal-News All-Area prep baseball team.

Allinger, a senior from Lakota West, and Beck, a senior from Monroe, are the Players of the Year after leading their respective squads to league championships this spring.

The JN awards are typically divided into pitcher and position player categories, but Allinger and Beck are standouts on the mound and in the field.

Allinger is headed to the University of Evansville, and former West coach Bill Dreisbach said he’s going there as a combo player. He was 5-2 with 1.42 earned run average as a pitcher this year, fanning 66 batters in 59 innings.

Usually a third baseman when not on the mound, Allinger hit .398 with 11 doubles, one triple, two homers, 23 RBIs, 33 runs and three stolen bases.

Monroe coach Bob Hunt said Beck is hoping to walk on at Miami University after a 6-1 pitching campaign that included one save, a 0.60 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 46.1 innings.

Also a shortstop, Beck had a .362 batting average with 12 RBIs, 18 steals and 19 runs.

West won the Greater Miami Conference title, despite having to forfeit a GMC victory over Sycamore because of an ineligible player. Officially, the Firebirds finished 24-6 overall and 15-3 in the conference.

Monroe was the Southwestern Buckeye League Southwestern Division champion (16-8, 10-2).

Maus is the Coach of the Year after leading Fenwick to a 19-13 record in his second season at the helm.

The Falcons were 21-8 last year, but lost 15 seniors to graduation. They got off to an 8-12 start in 2015 before reeling off 11 straight victories.

Fenwick shared the Greater Catholic League Coed North Division championship with Chaminade Julienne and advanced to a Division II regional semifinal, the program’s first regional berth since 2008.
