Bengals release veteran safety Iloka

It was a Sunday surprise out of the Bengals training camp as Cincinnati announced the club is parting ways with veteran safety George Iloka.

The 28-year old was a fifth-round draft pick in 2012 and hasn’t missed a start since the 2013 season. Iloka was set to earn $6.2 millon this season and he had three years left on his contract.

The job will likely go to rookie Jessie Bates. The second-round draft pick will make less than $1 million in his first season with the Bengals.

Iloka has often been a sounding board in the Cincinnati locker room for issues on and off the field.  He is known to have differing views on the national anthem issue, although Iloka has never taken a knee in protest before a game.
