Abby Nichols, Tyler Johnson earn first-team, All-American honors

Alter High School graduate Abby Nichols finished sixth in the 5,000-meter run Saturday night at the NCAA track and field championships in Eugene, Ore.

Nichols, who competed at Ohio State from 2016-20 and at the University of Colorado for the last two seasons, closed her college career with a time of 15 minutes, 33.09 seconds.

N.C. State sophomore Katelyn Tuohy won the event in 15:18.39.

Ohio State’s Tyler Johnson, a Stivers grad, finished eighth in the men’s 400-meter run in 45.83. Johnson and Nichols both earned first-team, All-American honors with their finishes.

Johnson also was a second-team, All-American as part of the Buckeyes’ 4 x 400 relay team. He finished 12th in the 400 in the NCAA championships in 2019.

Nichols finished 17th in the national meet in the 5,000 last year. She ran her personal best (15:15.46) in the 5,000 at the Mt. SAC Relays on April 13.

Colorado tied for ninth in the team standings. That tied it for the second-best team finish in program history.
