2 workers dead in fall from water tower

Two workers from Michigan died Friday in Butler County after falling from a water tower they were painting.

Around 7 p.m. Friday, two workers reportedly fell about 100 feet to their deaths in the 3500 block of Oxford-Reily Road, according to Butler County sheriff’s Sgt. Randall Lambert.

Lambert said scaffolding the painters were using failed. One worker died at the scene, and a second died while being loaded onto an Air Care helicopter, according to the sheriff’s office.

The identities of those killed were not released Saturday, and family members at the scene declined comment.

The 150-foot tall water tower is owned by the Southwest Regional Water District. The workers were contracted through Farmington Hills, Mich.-based V&T Painting LLC, for the Southwest Regional Water District.

Authorities said the workers were painting the water tower for about a week, according to our news partner WCPO 9 On Your Side.

The incident is being investigated by the sheriff’s office and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
