Weekend shooting suspect in custody

Phillip Coleman III is wanted in shooting death of 24-year-old man.

The suspect in a fatal Hamilton shooting remains in police custody in Kentucky.

Phillip Coleman III, 26, was picked up by the Lexington Police Department early Thursday after Hamilton officers determined the suspect left Ohio by Greyhound bus in an attempt to avoid arrest.

Hamilton police on Wednesday issued an arrest warrant against Coleman for the murder of Deandrew Jackson, 24, of East Avenue.

Jackson was found shot, but alive, just after 9:30 p.m. March 21 near the intersection of Pershing Avenue and Front Street. He was transported to Fort Hamilton Hospital before being flown to University of Cincinnati Medical Center. He died not long after arrival, according to police.

Sgt. Ed Buns said Hamilton police investigators traveled to Lexington on Thursday to interview Coleman. Buns said extradition procedure has to be followed before Coleman will return to Hamilton.

“Our detectives have been working around the clock to determine who committed this murder, attempt to locate the suspect, and take him into police custody,” said Hamilton police Chief Scott Scrimizzi. “Through the excellent cooperation of police agencies from many states, Coleman is now in custody.”

Hamilton police were also in contact with authorities in Mississippi, Georgia and other states along the Greyhound bus route.

Buns said he didn’t know if Coleman was armed at the time he was taken into custody. Buns said it’s also unknown where Coleman resides.

In retaliation for the shooting, police said there were three incidents on Saturday and Sunday where shots were fired.

In one incident, shots were fired into a home in the 200 block of Hanover Street. Several people were inside at the time, and a woman was grazed by a bullet. She refused to be taken to the hospital, police said.

Buns had said there “has been history” between the families and individuals involved in the incidents.

Buns said though an arrest has been made, investigation into the shootings is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call Hamilton police detectives at 513-868-5811, ext. 2001.
