The University of Cincinnati has expanded its NightRide program with new late-night shuttles.

The east route and west route shuttles visit 15 stops on the south side of campus every 20 minutes from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Students told Journal-News media partner WCPO it’s a service they need.

“I think that it’s really a great resource, especially being a female walking home late at night, or at any time of the day,” junior Sydney Smith said. “It can be a little sketchy sometimes, so I think it’s great they’re able to provide for the students.”

Junior Daniel Marhelko said it helps.

“It’s awesome,” Marhelko told WCPO. “We get out of rehearsals at 11, so it’s nice that you have an option to get home safely.”

Students said it’s a good way to avoid surcharges from services like Uber that charge extra during peak times.

The NightRide program also has 11 vans that operate within a mile of campus from 8 p.m. to midnight Sundays through Wednesdays and from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

The service is open to UC students, staff and faculty, but a Bearcat card is required to get a ride.
