Joan Stidham said it was a “really hard decision” to close The blank space of Hamilton.

She said the concept of an event venue for meetings, gatherings, celebrations and events in the renovated Max Joffe building, a former furniture store, was going “really well” but the closure was a personal decision.

“We love the space, I want someone to take off with it,” said Stidham.

Todd and Joan Stidham opened The blank space of Hamilton at 220 S. Third St. in 2019, and converted the top two floors into two apartments. The Stidhams reside in one, and have rented the second. All events and gatherings scheduled through the beginning of April will be honored, Stidham said.

The Stidhams announced the closure on The blank space of Hamilton’s Facebook page, adding they will seek someone in a long-term lease of the space for office or commercial use.

Stidham said she’s had a number of people reach out, from being sad they’re closing because they hoped to have an event there later in the year, to disappointments because a special memory was created at the space.

Kristen Rodriguez, of Hamilton, posted a comment on The blank space of Hamilton’s Facebook page, “This makes me very sad,” adding they had her daughter’s 18th birthday party there and “it was amazing.”

The closure announcement was preceded by a December post: “We have made the decision to stop booking any future events at the blank space. We are not sure how long this pause will need to last. Thank you for your understanding.”
