Police: Language barrier led to misreport of stabbing

A language barrier led to some confusion Sunday when a man fell from his bicycle and cut his arm, according to Hamilton Police Sgt. Brian Robinson.

According to initial reports, police were investigating a reported stabbing of a man at about 12:30 p.m. on a Dixie Highway sidewalk. A bicycle was ditched the the yard and police put up crime scene tape. An investigation determined there was no stabbing, police said Monday.

Robinson said a Hispanic man had purchased a 40 ounce bottle of beer at a drive thru, then fell from his bicycle and cut his arm on the broken bottle.

“He went back to the drive thru and because of the language barrier and the injury, they thought he had been robbed and stabbed,” Robinson said.

The man was treated for the arm wound at a local hospital, where a police officer who spoke Spanish determined it was an accident.
