Grand juries, which meet in secret, review criminal charges brought by police and prosecutors and investigate possible criminal behavior. The proceedings are usually one-sided, because the accused is not present and witnesses are not cross-examined.

A grand jury may issue an indictment if it finds probable cause that a crime was committed and the accused person is responsible. An indictment is an accusation that must then be proven in court. The grand jury may also elect to issue no indictment.

Indictments returned during a recent session of the Butler County grand jury:

William Earl Jones III, 2174 Clark St., Hamilton; indicted on two counts of assault, and one count each of aggravated burglary, trespass in a habitation, criminal trespass, and public indecency.

Joe E. Jones, 308 Oak St., Trenton; certified back to the lower court on one count of disorderly conduct.

Brian C. Peterson, 3195 James Place, Hamilton; indicted on one count each of trafficking in marijuana, possession of marijuana, illegal cultivation of marijuana, trafficking in hashish (direct), possession of hashish (direct), and aggravated possession of drugs (direct).

Gonnii Dymarius Leegary White, 705 Lewis Place, Middletown; indicted on one count of murder.

Tony Leslie Dennis, 871 Central Ave., Apt. C, Hamilton; indicted on two counts of aggravated trafficking in drugs (direct), and one count each of aggravated possession of drugs, illegal use or possession of drug paraphernalia, and trafficking in heroin (direct).

Jace Carlton Crull, 155 Martha Lane, Fairfield; indicted on two counts of possession of drugs (direct), and one count each of having weapons while under disability (direct), carrying concealed weapons (direct), possession of hashish (direct), possession of drugs (direct), and illegal use or possession of marijuana drug paraphernalia (direct).

Raymond Keith Shockley, 143 Edison Ave., Hamilton; indicted on one count each of illegal conveyance of weapons or prohibited items onto grounds of specified governmental facility (direct), and aggravated possession of drugs (direct).
