Grand juries, which meet in secret, review criminal charges brought by police and prosecutors and investigate possible criminal behavior. The proceedings are usually one-sided, because the accused is not present and witnesses are not cross-examined.

A grand jury may issue an indictment if it finds probable cause that a crime was committed and the accused person is responsible. An indictment is an accusation that must then be proven in court. The grand jury may also elect to issue no indictment.

Indictments returned during a recent session of the Butler County grand jury:

Star Emison, 1414 Northern Road, Somerville; indicted on one count each of aggravated possession of drugs, possession of marijuana, and driving under suspension.

Jonathon S. Conard, 102 Kenworth Ave., Hamilton; indicted on one count each of trafficking in marijuana, possession of marijuana, and possession of marijuana (direct).

Tray Burton, 716 Crawford St., Middletown; certified back to the lower court on one count each of aggravated trespass and assault (direct).

Owen Dawson, 1066 Brough Ave., Hamilton; indicted on one count each of carrying concealed weapons, improperly furnishing firearms to a minor, and tampering with evidence (direct).

Elizabeth Miller, 5381 Southgate Blvd., Apt. 2, Fairfield; certified back to the lower court on one count of petty theft.

Sarah Lynn Hupp, 7273 Kingswood Drive, West Chester; indicted on one count each of aggravated robbery, improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle, and carrying concealed weapons (direct).

Terrion Jackson, 330 East Ave., Hamilton; indicted on one count of trafficking in cocaine.

Joshua Gonzalez, 924 Millville Road, Hamilton; indicted on one count each of aggravated possession of drugs, violating a protection order, burglary (direct), and obstructing official business.

Kenneth Ray Fugate, 2219 Hawthorne St., Middletown; indicted on one count each of burglary, grand theft, theft of drugs (direct), attempted burglary (direct), and having weapons while under disability (direct).

Clarence Curtis Paugh, 2351 Tytus Ave., Apt. 2, Middletown; indicted on two counts of breaking and entering, and one count of theft.

Cristy L. Decant, 121 Tecumseh Drive, Hamilton; indicted on one count each of aggravated possession of drugs, possessing drug abuse instruments, resisting arrest, and illegal use or possession of drug paraphernalia.

Wendi Frederick, 1833 Pater Ave., Hamilton; indicted on one count of possession of cocaine.

Cody N. Lauer, 739 Maple Ave., Hamilton; certified back to the lower court on one count of obstructing official business.

Dylan P. Day, 8 E. High St., Liberty, In.; indicted on one count of theft from a person in a protected class.

Christopher M. Napier, 448 Wyoming Ave., Fairfield; certified back to the lower court on one count each of petty theft, and illegal use or possession of drug paraphernalia.

Rahshaune Lamound B. Butler, 805 S. Main St., Middletown; indicted on one count each of aggravated robbery, and having weapons while under disability (direct).

Andrew Daniel Rivera, 1201 Maple Ave., Hamilton; certified back to the lower court on one count of possessing drug abuse instruments.

Sidney Lee Kemper, 684 Linden Creek Drive, Morrow; indicted on one count each of telecommunications fraud, grand theft, identity fraud, and misuse of credit cards.

Carissa A. Porta, 7565 Wethersfield, Maineville; indicted on one count each of aggravated vehicular assault, vehicular assault, and operation while under the influence of alcohol or drug of abuse.

Daniel Stephen Trivett, Warren County Jail; indicted on one count of aggravated possession of drugs.
