Oxford woman killed in accident involving dump truck

An Oxford woman was killed Wednesday night after a dump truck struck a railroad overpass causing the back hoe it was hauling to break free and strike an oncoming car.

Patricia Manning, 56, who as driving a 1996 Toyota, was pronounced dead at the accident scene in the area of U.S. 27 south of Ohio 130 at the CSX railroad overpass in Hanover Twp. The accident happened about 5:50 p.m.

A 4-year-old passenger in Manning’s car, believed to be her grandson, was flown by medical helicopter to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital for evaluation. A second passenger, William Manning, 22, who is believed to be Manning’s son, was not injured and went with the child to the hospital.

The operator of the dump truck, Paul Ritter, 46, of Okeana, was transported to Fort Hamilton Hospital and released a couple hours later.

Clearance for the overpass is 13.9 feet and is clearly marked, according to sheriff’s deputies. Sgt. Rick Bucheit said there have been other incidents in which the overpass was hit.

The crash remains under investigation by the Butler County Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team.
