Jerron Dean, 29, has been charged with endangering children, a misdemeanor.
Dean failed to properly secure the gun, giving the boy access to it, according to Middletown police Lt. Scott Reeve.
Dean is scheduled to be in Middletown Municipal Court next week for a pre-trial hearing.
