Police are investigating the death of a 6-year-old boy Friday night believed to have been caused by a single, self-inflicted shot from his grandmother’s gun, according to authorities.

The victim, identified by authorities as Georgevoine Campbell, was not conscious or breathing when an ambulance crew arrived at the home on Royal Drive, according to a a run sheet from the incident.

Police Chief Jeff Kruithoff said the boy’s grandmother, who was not identified, said the victim shot himself with her gun.

“That’s what she’s admitted to,” Kruithoff said.

In addition, the boy’s father, George Campbell Jr. said he awoke to the sound of the gunshot.

Kruithoff said the shooting is considered apparently accidental, but that investigation continues and would include a check of DNA to see who held the gun. Results of the investigation will be presented to the prosecutor for consideration of charges, the chief said.

The first emergency call was placed at 11:18 p.m Friday.

The caller “kept screaming, ‘My baby,’” and hung up, according to the run sheet.

“My son grabbed my momma’s gun,” the caller said during two 911 calls. “He shot himself, man. Oh, my God.”

During the 911 calls, the caller screams for help and yells “My baby, no,” before hanging up. The dispatcher calls back and tries to work with caller, who continues to scream and sets down the phone, before emergency workers arrived.

The boy was pronounced dead at 11:30 p.m. Friday.

“The child was able to get the gun where it had been placed,” said Doyle Burke, chief investigator for the Warren County Coroner’s Office.

The home is near the intersection with Ohio 73, Central Avenue in Springboro, not far from the police department and city’s administrative center.

An autopsy conducted Saturday indicated the boy died from a single gunshot to the head, according to Burke.

On Monday, police continued to investigate, while the coroner’s office was awaiting test results.

Other than the run sheet from the incident, no reports from the shooting were available.
