6-year-old boy dies of apparent self-inflicted gunshot in Springboro

Police are investigating the death of a 6-year-old boy Friday night believed to have been caused by a single, self-inflicted shot from his grandmother’s gun, according to authorities.

The victim, identified by authorities as Georgevoine Campbell, was not conscious or breathing when an ambulance crew arrived at the home on Royal Drive, according to a a run sheet from the incident.

Police Chief Jeff Kruithoff said the boy’s grandmother, who was not identified, said the victim shot himself with her gun.

“That’s what she’s admitted to,” Kruithoff said.

In addition, the boy’s father, George Campbell Jr. said he awoke to the sound of the gunshot.

Kruithoff said the shooting is considered apparently accidental, but that investigation continues and would include a check of DNA to see who held the gun. Results of the investigation will be presented to the prosecutor for consideration of charges, the chief said.

The first emergency call was placed at 11:18 p.m Friday.

The caller “kept screaming, ‘My baby,’” and hung up, according to the run sheet.

“My son grabbed my momma’s gun,” the caller said during two 911 calls. “He shot himself, man. Oh, my God.”

During the 911 calls, the caller screams for help and yells “My baby, no,” before hanging up. The dispatcher calls back and tries to work with caller, who continues to scream and sets down the phone, before emergency workers arrived.
