Students awarded scholarships in memory of West Chester teen

Mark Valentine Memorial Scholarship winners announced.

Two Butler County residents have been awarded a college scholarship after submitting an essay about the power of friendship.

The first Mark Valentine Memorial Scholarships are in memory of a West Chester Twp. teen who was killed in a car accident just after Christmas Day last year.

The essays used to determine the scholarship winners asked local high school seniors to write about the power of friendship and how these relationships affect themselves and others.

Awarded the scholarships were:

  • Mark Hyams, a resident of West Chester Twp. and a graduate of St. Xavier High School, is majoring in psychology and attending Miami University.
  • Carolyn Jones, a resident of Hamilton and graduate of Cincinnati Christian School in Fairfield, is majoring in special education and attending Liberty University.

Both were awarded a $1,000 check to be used toward their college expenses.

Valentine placed great value on his friendships and is remembered for his warmth, humor, and the joy he brought to many, according to his family.
