FAIRFIELD — Fairfield High School theater students plan to poke fun at the theater in this year’s musical — “Curtains.”
The backstage murder mystery takes place in Boston in 1959. The cast and crew of a Broadway-bound musical become suspects after the show’s leading lady mysteriously drops dead while taking her final bow.
“The great thing about the play is it’s so funny,” said senior Alli Hershner. “It’s a chance for us to make fun of ourselves.”
She and senior Kelly Paulenich are co-directors of the production, a professional-level musical that ran on Broadway.
“I think it’s really interesting,” said senior Brooke Miller, who plays the female lead of Georgia. “It’s kind of like ‘Clue’ in a way. It’s really funny.”
The 63 cast members have a strong talent base, said male lead Brandon Steel, who plays Lt. Cioffi.
“He’s kind of like me in the sense he’s a big nerd,” the senior said. “He has this thrill of theater most people don’t understand. He’s so out there. He’s so outrageous and clever.”
Director Jay Muldoon said he picked the play for its contrast with earlier shows such as “Phantom of the Opera” and “Beauty and the Beast.”
This production requires students to focus on acting in addition to vocals and dancing, he said.
“It was time for a comedy,” he said.
