HAMILTON — The fourth-grade chorus from Riverview Elementary School opened Thursday night’s dedication with a pair of songs, “Welcome to Our School” and “Me Gusta Mi Escuela.”
“Still in its infancy, Riverview Elementary is already known for its diversity, its beautiful campus, its dedicated staff and as the home of the Royals,” said Principal Mary Anne Hughes in her opening remarks. “The educational benefits, state-of-the-art technology, increased security features and energy efficiency are just a few highlights of our beautiful new school.”
Riverview Elementary, the sixth of eight new elementary schools in the Hamilton City School District, is located on the site of the former Harrison Elementary and combines students from that school, the former Jefferson Elementary and some students from northern Lindenwald.
“As superintendent, each opening carries with it a sense of excitement and neighborhood uniqueness,” said Superintendent Janet Baker. “I’m continually impressed and proud of the dedication and compassion (the neighborhoods) have for the school and the community.
“We are truly blessed with these new schools and the revitalization of the community we love,” she said.
George Jonson, president of the Board of Education, called the construction project “a great success, not only for the Hamilton City School District but for the city of Hamilton.”
He spoke of a journey that began in 1999 with the renovation of Garfield Middle School and includes the eight new elementary schools that replaced 13 buildings, the rebuilding of Wilson Middle School, and an ongoing extensive renovation of Hamilton High School.
“This journey has been a once-in-a-lifetime journey, and we owe a debt of gratitude to the people of Hamilton,” he said.
Mayor Pat Moeller said, “Motivated teachers in this building are changing lives. ... We’re going to have all kinds of great graduates.”
He then presented Hughes with a city flag, saying “we’re glad to be proud partners with you in this endeavor.”
After a few remarks by state Sen. Gary Cates, R-West Chester Twp., and another song by the fourth-graders, Baker said, “On behalf of the Hamilton City School District, I declare Riverfront Elementary officially dedicated,” and invited parents and members of the community to stay for tours of the new building.
