Newlyweds open a Kidd Coffee franchise

FAIRFIELD — The specialty coffee business is crowded, but Jeff and Wrajean Nauman think they have the right mix to succeed in Fairfield.

The newlywed couple opened a Kidd Coffee franchise on 311 Nilles Road on May 29. Kidd Coffee was founded in 1999 with a store in Mason and has its own blend of flavors. It expanded to a second Mason store near West Chester Twp. and has a Middletown shop.

Wrajean Nauman’s daughter, Brittany Maier, worked at the original store for eight months, so the family was familiar with the franchise philosophy.

“We’re really heavy on customer service,” said Lane Kidd, the founder’s son and owner of two Kidd Coffees. “When someone comes in, we want them to have an over-the-counter experience instead of a stand-behind-the-counter-type deal. We want to have a spot where people can kind of get together and talk about what’s going on in the community.”

Wrajean Nauman, who worked in the catering business for 15 years, kept that in mind when designing the new store.

There is a couch along with comfortable chairs and tables. There is Pandora, so customers can play just about any music, in addition to free Wi-Fi.

“We promote Bible studies and youth groups to come, and just people to come out and feel at home,” she said. “When people come in here, their mouth just drops. They’re like, ‘Wow.’ They say it’s so much nicer inside than outside.”

But for those customers who are in a hurry, the store has covered drive-through service and a super espresso machine that produces a drink faster than the traditional espresso machine.

Jeff Nauman spent 33 years as a truck driver and coffee drinker, so he knows the need for convenience.

“Most people are leaving here to go to I-275 to go toward work, and they hit 127 and head south,” he said, pointing out it’s just a few turns to get back to 127.

“You hate to cross a four-lane highway to get your coffee.”
