Miami plans to narrow field to three to four applicants by January

OXFORD — Miami University is now interviewing candidates for the position as dean of its campuses in Hamilton and Middletown, as well as the Voice of America Learning Center in West Chester Twp.

As of this week, Miami has received 49 applications for the position, mostly from men and mostly from candidates out of state.

Although applications are still being accepted, the university is hosting preliminary interviews to narrow the initial field of candidates, said Claire Wagner, Miami spokeswoman.

The university has a committee reviewing applications.

Miami plans to select three or four finalist by the of January and conduct on-campus interviews in February.

The new dean will take office by July 1, 2010.

Most people seeking the job come from out of state, with just 10 people applying from Ohio.

Miami declined to say whether there are internal candidates to avoid possibly identifying someone, Wagner said.

Thirty-nine applicants are from universities, one is from the United States Air Force, two are from technical institutes, one is from a community college and six others are employed elsewhere.

According to the university’s posting for the job, Miami is seeking someone experienced in developing partnerships with community organizations and creating and managing innovative programs.

The ideal candidate is “a dynamic and passionate leader, an accomplished and committed educator and a talented and creative administrator with experience at a similarly complex institution with a demonstrated and abiding commitment to diversity and a proven record in creating initiatives and programs that enhance diversity among faculty, students and staff,” according to the job posting on the university’s Web site.
