ROSS TWP. — Some go to school to get a good job. But some get a job in order to finish school.

Jena Botting, Ross High School Class of 2010, said that being part of the Work Studies Program made her a better student.

She had an Individual Education Plan since she was in the second grade, but rather than be stigmatized by it, she found it encouraging.

“There were a lot of things about going to school that were challenging,” she said. “I had a hard time taking tests, and it took me a while to learn things.

“But with an IEP, I feel like a regular student. I could get some extra help rather than sit there and struggle with things.”

Joining the Work Studies Program at Ross helped her focus, and she got classroom credit for the time she spent bagging groceries and pushing carts at the Kroger store in Colerain Twp. near Northgate Mall.

“When people have jobs, they struggle finding time for work and school,” she said. “But it was a benefit to me. I knew when I had to be at work and when I had to get my work done, so it actually improved my grades.”

Her classmate Andrew Risch had a similar experience going through the Career Based Intervention Program offered through Butler Tech, where he went to classes in the morning and to his job at McDonald’s after 10:30 a.m.

“I’m a good student. I do my work and I give it 100 percent, but I have to study hard and getting through high school was hard,” he said. “When I started high school, I was hanging out with the wrong people, missing a lot of school and doing bad stuff, and then I went to move in with my grandma and she pushed me through school and gave me the confidence to graduate.

“She taught me to never give up.”

Even though they didn’t go through heavily academic, college-based programs, Risch and Botting both plan to continue their educations.

“I got accepted at WyoTech in Daytona Beach in marine biology and fixing boats, but that’s too far away from home, plus you can’t get a job around here working on boats,” Risch said. “Now, I’m thinking about going back to school for welding.”

Botting has enrolled at Miami University Hamilton with an undeclared major, where she feels confident she’ll get the extra help she needs.

“I’m a little nervous, but I’m pretty sure I can do it,” she said.
