Group plans sweet treats as part of Cookies for Cops

A great way to make somebody feel appreciated is something home cooked and heartfelt. So on Oct. 5 the women and men who wear the badge to protect and serve in Hamilton will get something sweet as a sign of appreciation for keeping the city safe.

Cookies for a Cop has become a national program that is now in more than 20 states and involves a very organized effort to bake over 20,000 (maybe a few store bought as well) goodies and then get the finished product into the hands and stomachs of law enforcement officers.

The act of kindness is done once annually and has spread from coast-to-coast. The group has even hit social media to spread its message and states that by providing some baked goods it sends a huge statement of love and appreciation.

The Cookies for Cops social media presence has produced a well visited Facebook page and a heavy buzz on Twitter. Organizers of the group have used the Facebook page to promote a message of respect towards law enforcement in order to balance out the “all-cops are bad” label the group said it feels is being draped unfairly on police.

Rachel McCoy is one of the folks who will be churning out the sweets for Hamilton’s finest. She said that on Oct. 5, delivery of the goodies will be made.

“We have approximately 800 cookies pledged to us through donations from area at-home bakers and those attending the event,” McCoy said. “We have not set a definite delivery time since it is a work day. I’m trying to work it out with everyone who wants to be part of the delivery.”

Cookies or brownie donations can be handmade or bought.

Because the Hamilton Police Department also has a K-9 on staff, the Cookies for a Cop group has arranged to have a small basket filled with dog toys and dog treats ready for delivery so nobody gets left out.
