A former cop and a retired Marine officer will join Fairfield City Council at the beginning of the New Year, and next week they’ll take their oaths of office.

Dale Paullus, 66, a lifelong Fairfield resident, is a former firefighter, police officer and Butler County deputy sheriff. He was elected in November to represent the city’s Second Ward. He said he “always had an interest” in running for office, and the opportunity came when Councilman Craig Keller announced he wasn’t seeking re-election. He ran at the request of Don Hassler, a friend of 45 years.

“He was the one who inspired me to run for City Council,” Paullus said.

Paullus will be joined by Terry Senger, a former Fourth Ward City Council member who lost a 2017 bid for an at-large seat. He’ll return, this time representing the Third Ward. He’ll succeed council member Debbie Pennington, who was ineligible to seek re-election due to term limits.

Senger, 62, sat on City Council multiple times, last in 2015 when he was forced down due to term limits after serving consecutive terms.

“I just enjoy being involved in the decision process for the betterment of Fairfield,” he said. “This is my hometown and I enjoy being part of what it takes to make it better.”

Senger was away from Fairfield only for college and when he was on active duty with the Marine Corps, but transitioned from active duty to Marine reserves in 1988.

Senger said he wants to focus on continuing to develop single-family properties.

“You have to make sure policies are in place in order to promote single-family housing and good businesses, and that’s what makes a community run,” Senger said.

Paullus said he’ll focus on public safety issues, but also he wants to see the blight in the northern part of Ohio 4 addressed and the area revitalized.

“I want to see the city prosper,” he said, adding he also wants to make sure property owners take care of their land.

Paullus is a now-former Parks Board member and sat on Planning Commission as the Parks Board representative.

Senger and Paullus will take their oaths of office at 6 p.m. Dec. 30 at the Fairfield Municipal Building on Pleasant Avenue. Also taking oaths of office are First Ward Council member Leslie Besl and Fourth Ward Council member Tim Abbott, both elected to second terms.
