The event is partly to raise funds, partly to celebrate a successful competition season, which ended with Fascinating Rhythm being named Grand Champion at a March 26 meet in Wapakoneta.
“We’ve never had any kind of year-end celebration before,” said director Melynda Caswell. “So we wanted to get something together to say ‘Fasincating Rhythm!’ ”
Because the group only meets once a week, Caswell said, it doesn’t have as large a repertoire as, say, Rhapsody in Blue, which meets every day, so they wanted to come up with something to wrap into the group’s 20-minute competition show, “Call Me,” which Caswell said is a tribute to “their all-important cellphones,” and includes tunes from Blondie and Lady Gaga.
At the suggestion of Rex Bucheit, principal at Highland Elementary where Caswell teaches music, they decided on a fashion show and enlisted the aid of Highland girls to show off the clothes they have based on the American Girl dolls and accessories.
“It’s not really an American Girl pageant, but that’s one of the options because at Highland, American Girl dolls are a pretty big thing,” Caswell said. “We may do something else next year. We figure every year it might morph into something else.”
The evening also will include raffles, split the pot, silent auction and desserts for sale, Caswell said, with money going toward next year’s group, to have a little money in the pot to get started.
“The past two years, we started at zero,” Caswell said, “so we’re hoping this event will jump-start our next year.”
But unlike other fashion shows that try to hawk a line of goods, this one is simply about girls getting together to share.
“This is just for fun,” said parent volunteer Shawn Davis. “We’re not trying to get anyone to buy an American Girl doll or clothes or anything like that. It’s just a fun, end of the year event.”
