Fairfield resident to compete in World Sport Stacking Championships

Robert Weatherington is known as “Cupstacker Bob” and is a world-record holder in sport stacking.

Sport stacking involves contestants taking groups of plastic cups and trying to stack and unstack them as quickly as possible.

Weatherington’s skill is such that he is on the United States national team and will compete in the World Sport Stacking Championships in Germany in early April.

“I’ve connected with a lot of people from all over the world,” through the activity, said Weatherington, a Fairfield resident. “I started doing it when I was in the fifth grade. It may not be considered a sport as such, but it was the first time I was athletically superior to my classmates.”

Weatherington, a senior at Badin High School, is all over YouTube as “Cupstacker Bob” and has an official sponsorship through Nike. The company paid him to use a short take from one of his online videos in a commercial that aired during the Super Bowl in 2012.

“It’s a good outlet for me,” Weatherington said of his enthusiasm for sport stacking. “It’s almost a way of meditation.”

Weatherington is the son of Vincent Wade and Mary Weatherington of Fairfield and a graduate of Bethany School in Glendale. He plans to double major in dance and social work in college, with his top choices right now being Ohio University or Ball State.

Weatherington’s best friend lives in Chicago — the two met online via sport stacking. And as a fifth-grader, he spent three months in Australia as an exchange student. His best friend from that experience is a sport stacker on the Australian national team who will also be competing in Germany.

“There are probably 100,000 of us (sport stackers) in the United States,” Weatherington said of the regular stacking crowd. “One day, there were 600,000 people all over the world setting a record by stacking at the same time.”

Weatherington has been to two previous world championships, but not as a competitor. This year, he will be one of 35 members of the U.S. team in competition.

“I’m not known for my stacking speed, but I’m good with my consistency,” he said. “I’m sort of an all-around performer.”

The World Sport Stacking Championships are scheduled for April 2-3 in the city of Speichersdorf, located in the state of Bavaria in southeastern Germany.
