Dog tag deadline looming

Butler County Auditor Roger Reynolds is reminding dog owners who have not purchased a 2016 dog license to do so by Sunday, Jan. 31 or risk a fine and an increased tag price.

Dog licenses are once again $14 each. On Feb. 1, the license fee doubles to $28. Anyone who owns, keeps or harbors a dog is required by state law to purchase a tag, and all dogs older than three months of age must be registered and wear their tag at all times.

Tags can be purchased online at www.ButlerCountyAuditor.org. The site accepts MasterCard and Visa. The online purchase process is the most efficient and is encouraged. Tags are also available at the Auditor's Office in downtown Hamilton at 130 High St. on the third floor and at multiple locations throughout the county. The list of businesses that sell licenses is also available on the Auditor's website.

“We’re pleased that the number of tags increased slightly in 2015, bucking a recent trend,” said Auditor Reynolds. “It’s important that dog owners purchase a license and understand that it’s state law. If a dog runs off or gets lost, the license is a means of identity. A license may be the only way of retrieving a lost pet. Also, licensing a dog is an issue of public safety.”
