HAMILTON — The Hamilton ABLE program will begin evening classes a week early to give adults a chance to prepare for and take the practice GED before a fee is enacted Sept. 1.
The Ohio Department of Education has announced that due to budget cuts the $65 fee for the GED test will no longer be waived. In the past, students who passed the practice test could take the test free up to three times.
Since learning of the change, Hamilton ABLE educators have been calling students from last year to pass on the new information and opted to open evening classes Monday, Aug. 24.
“The teachers really do want to help everybody succeed,” said Kathy Petrek, director of the Hamilton ABLE, adding that “the GED is not the end. It is a boost to the next step, which is post-secondary education.”
Morning classes are scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to noon Monday through Wednesday at the Butler County Workforce One, 4631 Dixie Hwy.; evening classes are 5 to 9 p.m.
“Students should be willing to commit themselves to three days,” Petrek said, which includes ABLE orientation and taking the practice test. “The test is only going to get harder so I recommend that anybody who wants to get the fee waived come in and prepare to enroll for the test next week. That will give some flexibility.”
Adults who pass the practice GED test before Aug. 31 qualify for the waiver and have at least three months before the authorization expires, Petrek said.
“In this economy, more than ever, we need this,” said Rose Marie Stiehl, Middletown’s Adult Education principal. “This will impact hundreds of area adults who are now caught in a catch-22 situation, especially those who are unemployed. Without a diploma, it will be almost impossible to obtain a job. Without a fee waiver, it will be difficult to pay for the test.”
