Butler County Board of Elections to get a new board member this March

Kathy Wyenandt had a 50-50 chance to earn the Butler County Democratic Party’s nomination to the county’s board of elections.

The party met for its first meeting of the year on Thursday evening at Butler Tech’s D. Russel Lee campus.

Butler County Democratic Party Central Committee chair Bruce Carter’s term is set to expire in March. Carter was seeking the party’s nomination to be re-appointed, but Wyenandt, the party’s Central Committee vice chair, also wanted the seat.

More than 70 party members attended the meeting, and after voting ended up tied party by-laws mandate a coin flip shall determine the winner. A non-voting observer flipped the coin. Carter called heads but it landed tails.

Wyenandt’s term begins in March, but will be formally appointed to the seat by Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted.

The Butler County Board of Elections, just like all other boards in Ohio, consists of two Democrats and two Republicans. The other Democrat on the board is Frank Cloud, who is the board’s chair. The Republicans on the board of elections is GOP Executive Chair Todd Hall and GOP Central Committee Chair Chris Wunnenberg.
