Atrium awards 29 health scholarships

MIDDLETOWN — Twenty-nine students recently received health career scholarships at the 40th annual Health Career Scholarship Luncheon at Atrium Medical Center.

Scholarships are available to Atrium Medical Center employees, family members of employees and medical staff and volunteers, and students of Greentree Health Science Academy.

Since its inception in 1972, the hospital auxiliary has given more than $650,000 to assist more than 500 students, including this year’s recipients.

The scholarship program is funded by proceeds from the auxiliary’s gift shop, memorial fund, flower sale, book fairs, jewelry sales and baby pictures. In addition, the medical staff and the Atrium Medical Center Foundation provide funding.

The Medical Staff Scholarship, funded by Atrium’s medical staff, was presented to Sundeap Rao, son of Naryan and Sujata Rao. He graduated from Middletown High School in 2008 and the University of Akron in 2010.

Rao was one of 35 students accepted into a six-year Accelerated BS/MD program through the University of Akron and Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine. Rao is expected to complete his medical degree in June 2014.

The Joan Davies Scholarship, funded by the Atrium Medical Center Foundation and the Auxiliary, was awarded to Marie Kehr. She graduated from Edgewood High School and Anderson College, is a wife and mother of two sons, and is employed as a registerted nurse at Atrium. Kehr is a grad student at the University of Cincinnati, and she expects to graduate as a family nurse practitioner in June 2012.

The Adele Thorn Memorial Award was presented to Mitchell Lawson, whose mother is an Atrium employee. Lawson is a graduate of Middletown High School, is employed full-time at Corner Stone Inc., and is a full-time student at UC’s Raymond Walters College. He is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in medical imaging.

The following students also received scholarships:

• Melissa Abernathy, daughter of Mark and Vicki Abernathy, graduated from Middletown High School and is a second-year grad student at the Ohio State University. She will complete her master’s in occupational therapy in December. She received a scholarship last year.

• Ashlee Bromaghim, daughter of Beth Anne and David Rumon, graduated from Fairfield High School and Greentree Health Science Academy. She is a second-year student at Sinclair Community College, pursuing an associate’s in nursing. She received a scholarship last year.

• Katie Cramer, daughter of James and Shelli Cramer, graduated from Middletown Christian School. She is a senior at Liberty University and will complete her bachelor’s in nursing in December. She received a scholarship last year.

• Jacequeline Crawford, daughter of Alecia Crawford, is a 2011 graduate of Fairfield High School and Greentree Health Science Academy. She will attend Raymond Walters College this fall, pursuing an associate’s in nursing.

•Amanda Deskins, daughter of Melissa and Carl Deskins, is a 2011 graduate of Lebanon High School. She will be a freshman at Manchester College, with plans to pursue a doctorate of pharmacy.

• Amanda Flannery, spouse of Dustin Flannery, is employed at Atrium and is a part-time student at Florida Hospital College of Health Sciences. She is working toward a bachelor’s radiologic sciences.

• Jacob Fletcher, son of Bruce and Sandra Fletcher, is a 2011 graduate of Middletown High School. He has been accepted into the biomedical sciences program at OSU, where he will be a freshman this fall.

• Nicole Gilbert, daughter of John and Robin Gilbert, graduated from Madison High School. She will be a senior at OSU, with plans to complete her bachelor’s in June 2012 and then go on to medical school. She has received a scholarship the past three years.

• Emily Hellman, daughter of Gregory and Toni Hellman, is a 2011 graduate of Lakota West High School. She will be a freshman at UC this fall, with plans to pursue a doctorate of pharmacy.

• Irene Herrmann is an registered nurse at Atrium in the Maternal Child Health Center and a part-time student at Indiana Wesleyan University. She is pursuing her bachelor’s in nursing.

•Nicklauss Hess, son of Lisa and Steve Kessler, is a graduate of Springboro High School and Muskingum University. He will be a fourth-year medical student at Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He plans to pursue a career in family medicine and has been a previous scholarship recipient.

• Lisa Ling, daughter of Anthony and Connie Ling, is a graduate of Fenwick High School and a 2011 graduate of Wright State University, with a bachelor’s in biological sciences. In the fall, she will begin a master’s program in snatomy at Wright State. She is a previous hospital volunteer and scholarship recipient.

• Jo Lusk, mother of two, is a registered nurse at Atrium Medical Center and a part-time student at Ohio University. She will complete her bachelor’s in nursing in November, but plans to continue her education, with a long-term goal as a critical care specialist.

• Mary Beth Morgan, spouse of Mark Morgan and mother of two, is a registered nurse at Atrium Medical Center Maternal Health Clinic and a part-time student at Indiana Wesleyan University. She is pursuing her bachelor’s in nursing.

• Leah Mulhall, daughter of Martin and Teresa Mulhall, is a 2011 graduate of Fenwick High School and will be a freshman at the University of Kentucky, pursuing a degree in nursing.

• Alecia Oldfield, daughter of Teresa and Jamie Hollon, is a graduate of Monroe High School. She will be a sophomore at Eastern Kentucky University, pursuing a career in occupational therapy.

• Dorothy Paynter, daughter of Tabitha Fairchild, is a 2011 graduate of Middletown High School. She will be a freshman at OSU this fall, beginning her studies toward her career goal as a dentist.

• Hiliary Pierce, daughter of James and Paula Pierce, is a graduate of Monroe High School, a former hospital volunteer, and a previous scholarship recipient. She will be a sophomore at OSU, pursuing a bachelor’s in radiologic science and therapy.

• Olivia Pierce, daughter of James and Paula Pierce, is a graduate of Monroe High School, a former hospital volunteer, and a previous scholarship recipient. She will be a senior at Otterbein University, completing her bachelor’s in allied health, with plans to attain a doctorate in physical therapy.

• Pat Robbins, spouse of David Robbins Jr., is a graduate of Madison High School. She is employed at Atrium Medical Center and is a part-time student at Weber State University, studying for an associate’s to pursue a career in clinical laboratory science.

• Alexandra Schneider is a graduate of Stephen T. Badin High School. She will be a senior at Ohio State University, pursuing a bachelor’s in radiography.

• Erin Sizemore, daughter of Mike and Ellen Sizemore, is a 2011 graduate of Valley View High School. She will be a freshman at Sinclair Community College, working toward an associate’s in nursing.

• Kaylie Snyder, daughter of Charles and Lana Snyder, is a graduate of Madison High School and Greentree Health Science Academy and is a previous scholarship recipient. She will be a junior at Kettering College of Medical Arts, pursuing a bachelor’s in human biology/pre-med.

• Kayla Taylor, daughter of Tammy and Randy Sorrell, is a 2011 graduate of Edgewood High School and Greentree Health Science Academy. In the fall, she will be a freshman at UC; her career goal is to become a pediatrician.

• Jennifer Wurth, daughter of Doug and Natalie Wurth, is a 2011 graduate of Springboro High School and an Atrium Jr. Volunteer. She will be a freshman at OSU, pursuing her bachelor’s in psychology.

• Aimee Wynn, daughter of Marie Wynn and David Wynn, is a 2011 graduate of Fairfield High School and Greentree Health Science Academy. As a freshman at Sinclair Community College, she will study for her associate’s in nursing.
