Downtown Hamilton’s popular Alive After 5 event — where downtown businesses stay open extra late —returns tonight.

Shops along High Street will keep their doors open from 5 to 9 p.m. today, May 4, to welcome shoppers.

The event is meant to kick off the weekend in Hamilton a day early and draw people to the city’s core with live music, food and retail deals after they clock off work for the day.

The first Alive After 5 was held in 2015 and the crowds have grown ever since, organizers said.

Each month's Alive After 5 features a theme. Today's is "Once Upon A Time."

There will be a story time and other activities for children, The Lane Libraries bookmobile, a scavenger hunt, costume contest, and lots of specials from downtown Hamilton businesses.

Children’s books to be donated to Highland Elementary School’s #HighlandREADS initiative will also be collected during the event.

So dress as your favorite book character and head downtown — there’s plenty of free parking for Alive After 5.
