A Middletown student has not been at school this week after a doctor reported to school officials a suspected case of mumps for the child.
The student at Middletown’s Highview 6th Grade Center went to the doctor on Friday and the student’s parent contacted the school indicating the doctor suspected a possible case of mumps, said Elizabeth Beadle, spokeswoman for Middletown Schools.
A letter from the school then went home with other students on Monday about the situation.
There are no other suspected cases of mumps among students at the school, Beadle said.
The child, she said, is awaiting a doctor’s tests to determine the exact illness.
Mumps is a contagious disease caused by a virus. It typically starts with a few days of fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness, and loss of appetite, followed by swollen salivary glands.
Classes at the school, at 106 South Highview Road, were not disrupted Tuesday and classes will be held according to schedule Wednesday and for the remaining of the week, Beadle said.
