The top 10 candidates were invited to participate in an Emergency Medical Services practical assessment, Stumpf said.
They also were interviewed by a panel consisting of Chief Stumpf, Assistant Chief Dan Bailey and human resources director Melanie Brokaw. Included in the interview was a series of scenarios that they had to address as well. The candidates were scored on these sections as well as points were given for years of experience and extra emergency services certifications.
“We are blessed with a great staff, both career and part time,” Stumpf said. “All of the candidates scored extremely well, but fortunately for Jeff he edged the competition.”
He said Wurtz is “a good solid firefighter and paramedic” who quietly goes about his duties without fanfare.
“Jeff said he was moved by the events of Sept 11, 2001, and that ultimately led him to forgo a career in marketing and pursue public safety,” Stumpf said.
The fire department vacancy was created when one of the existing career members obtained his nursing degree and opted for a career change, Stumpf said.
Wurtz graduated from Oak Hills High School, attended University of Cincinnati and graduated from Northern Kentucky University. He has been a part-time firefighter/paramedic with Liberty Twp. since 2011.
Wurtz also is a part time firefighter-paramedic with Colerain Twp. Fire Department.
